Welcome to our Roost!
Bootheel Boss Gobblers

The National Wild Turkey Federation, Inc., according to its Articles of Incorporation, states “To purposes for which the corporation is organized are exclusively educational and charitable, and shall to establish, maintain and promote interest in the wise conservation and management of the American wild turkey; to raise money for developing, preserving, restoring, and maintaining wild turkey habit to give and promote entertainments, lectures, exhibitions, of any and all descriptions for the general instructions of the members and general public; and to do all other things necessary and proper in the future of said objectives, not inconsistent with its exclusively educational and charitable objectives.”

Since the National Wild Turkey Federation was chartered, on March 28th, 1973, it has been tested on every front, and today serves as the “voice” of the wild turkey – a voice that must be heard.

With membership numbering in the excess of 231 thousands nationally, a local chapter program is not necessary to begin action programs on a level which will coordinate with state and national programs to strengthen restocking and management efforts.

While some state have taken the lead in restoring the wild turkey into all suitable habitat, other states have dragged their feet, blaming their slower progress on any number of factors. Unless we take the initiative to see that all potential states have a suitable long-range wild turkey program and that the programs receive their fair share of revenue, who will?

Juniors Acquiring Knowledge, Ethics, and Sportsmanship

Jakes Logo
The National Wild Turkey Federation’s JAKES Program is dedicated to informing, educating and involving its youth in wildlife conservation and the wise stewardship of our natural resources.

PASSING ON THE TRADITION

You can create lasting memories and share our outdoor traditions with youngsters by involving them in the National Wild Turkey Federation’s JAKES Program. JAKES, which stands for Juniors Acquiring Knowledge Ethics and Sportsmanship is the NWTF’s program for member ages 17 and under. Developed in 1981, the JAKES program is dedicated to teaching the principles of wildlife management and passing along the traditions of safe, ethical and responsible hunting.

JAKES CONSERVATION FIELD DAYS WILL BE MAY 17TH, 2003 AT DEER FIELD IN CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO.

Each year, the BOOTHEEL BOSS GOBBLERS chapter of the NWTF host youth events called Porter Wagoner/JAKES Conservation Field Days. Hosting a JAKES event is on of the best ways to teach young people about the outdoors, hunting, and conservation. Events are a blend of hands-on activities, education, fellowship and family fun.

BOOTHEEL BOSS GOBBLERS chapter of the NWTF JAKES events have been fishing, outdoor scavenger hunt, guided nature walk, cleaning the woods of trash, races, building bird houses, turkey calling, making fishing lures, teaching shooting, and the use of archery equipment.

The National JAKES event is a special opportunity for selected JAKES members from every state in the nation and Canada to attend a three-day event in South Carolina. Contact the state chapter at www.monwtf.org to find out how this special JAKES member is selected in your state.

CONSERVATION IN THE CLASSROOM

Think about it, today’s children will determine the future of North America’s wildlife and natural resources. Kids want to learn about wildlife, but resources for teachers are limited. Now, teachers have access to a learning resource that’s fun and educational. It’s called the WILD about TURKEY EDUCATION BOX, and it’s bringing the outdoors into the classroom. The box contains multi-curriculum lesson plans, bulletin board displays, pencils, rulers, a video and multi-media CD/CD-ROM Education boxes can be purchased through the NWTF Turkey Shoppe and are also supplied to schools at no cost by BOOTHEEL BOSS GOBBLERS when available.

NWTF ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

The NWTF Academic Scholarship program was developed to help ensure we have the dedicated conservationists needed for the future. Graduating high school seniors can earn money for college through the NWTF Scholarship Program. Three levels of scholarships are available: local, state, and a $10,000 national scholarship. Contact the BOOTHEEL BOSS GOBBLERS or school guidance counselor for details.

The NWTF also provides scholarship support for FFA students pursuing a wildlife management or agriculture degree. The scholarship fund is administered through the National Future Farmers of America Foundation (FFA).

NATIONAL 4-H SHOOTING SPORTS IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE NWTF

The NWTF committed $1 million to the 4-H Shooting Sports Program. This funding is to ensure that over 300,000 young people who are participating in 4-H shooting sports programs are given the opportunity to learn about shooting sports in an atmosphere that fosters citizenship, emphasizes safety and develops leadership.

BOOTHEEL BOSS GOBBLERS - GO TO THE BIRDS.
By: Allen “horntagger” Morris

February 9th this year the Bootheel Boss Gobblers Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation had their eighteenth annual super-fund banquet in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. In which the banquet went to the birds, the birds of prey that is.

The speaker for the event was the founder of The World Bird Sanctuary, ornithologist Walter C. Crawford Jr. who is recognized around the world for his leadership in avian scientific studies, education, reintroduction of endangered species, habitat management and wildlife rescue.

Today, he directs on of North America’s largest and most respected sanctuaries concerned with the conservation of bird species worldwide. World Bird Sanctuary emphasis on preserving birds of prey (raptors) and parrots.

They brought in and flew many types of birds of prey within inches of and over 500 in attendance at the banquet. With a Barn Owl flying silently with inches of my head.

With the comments from Mr. Crawford praising the National Wild Turkey Federation and the Wild Turkey Hunters for the great contributions to the reintroduction of the Wild Turkey in the United States. Along with learning a few new things, it was one the best banquets and seminars I have attended.

If you missed out and would like to learn more about The World Bird Sanctuary take a look www.worldbirdsanctuary.org

Hope to see you at next years banquet. Allen “horntagger” Morris
