If you've ever fished topwater and fell in love with the dynamite explosions produced from hungry bass, then this is the way to go. Especially late in the year when bass are gorging themselves on baitfish. During the springtime, throw a red 7" worm, rigged texas style off the banks, be ready to set the hook! |

Iron Mountain Lake by Jason Lewis
Mud Creek feeds this 100 acre lake just 5 minutes from Bismarck conservation area and 15 minutes from Farmington (hwy 67). The lake has a large spillway so large rains actually really turn fish on there and allow you to fish areas that would otherwise be too shallow. It has a good boat ramp and limited parking.
If you are fishing out of a boat you will want to know that the shallow end of this lake has about 50% less than 3’ and filled with vegetation. There is a channel pretty much from the spillway to the backend where the creek empties into lake. There are a few turns of that channel that make for good spots to catch fish. The channel runs close to the handicap accessible fishing jetty and it is not uncommon to find fish bunched up on the end of that jetty. The shoreline seems to have been dredged at some point. So the lake has deeper water near the shoreline than in the center of the backend. Many locals say fishing the backend from shore is the best way to bag some huge bass thru the moss. My best luck has been when I concentrate on the dam.
The lake is obviously more easily fished in late winter early spring because the water warms quickly and the vegetation is not dense. Rattle traps, shallow running crankbaits & spinnerbaits. You can fish the deeper edges of grass just touching the grass lines with crankbait. If you own one a Luhr Jensen Speed Trap can be very good. As the vegetation gets thick go to topwater, plastic frogs & rats. Of course tubes and plastic crawdads are effective. A lot of crappie and bluegill fishermen so I assume the lake is plentiful.
